Senga Bay

The closest stretch of Lake Malawi to Lilongwe

Senga Bay is the lake's nearest point to the capital, about two hours east of Lilongwe through Salima. That proximity is its whole advantage: it is the only part of Lake Malawi you can reach, enjoy properly and return from inside a single day.

The beach is broad and sandy, the water shallow and warm, and there is enough going on — fish markets, boat trips out to Lizard Island, a resident crocodile farm — to fill more than one day if you want it. It is also the usual first stop on longer lakeshore journeys heading north.

Salima District nearby is one of the better places in the country to see Gule Wamkulu, the masked dance of the Chewa, which UNESCO lists as intangible cultural heritage.

Best time to visit Senga Bay

April to November

Comfortable most of the year. April to August is dry and pleasantly warm. October and November are hot. December to March brings the rains, which can make the lake rough and cloud the water.

Getting there

Around two hours from Lilongwe on a good road — close enough that our Senga Bay day tour leaves after breakfast and is back for dinner.

Common questions

Can you do Lake Malawi as a day trip from Lilongwe?
Senga Bay is the only realistic option, at about two hours each way. Cape Maclear is four hours and needs an overnight stay to be worth the drive.
Is the snorkelling as good as Cape Maclear?
No. Senga Bay is shallower and sandier, so the water is less clear and there are fewer cichlids. It is a beach day rather than a snorkelling destination.
