Mulanje Massif

Sapitwa Peak, 3,002m — the highest point in Central Africa

Mulanje rises straight out of the tea estates of southern Malawi as a single granite block, twenty kilometres across and standing nearly two kilometres above the plain around it. Sapitwa, its highest point, reaches 3,002 metres — the highest ground between Kilimanjaro and the Drakensberg.

It is a walker's mountain rather than a climber's. Paths lead up through forest onto a rolling plateau of grassland and streams, with mountain huts spaced a day apart, so the classic trip is two or three days moving between them. Chambe Peak and the Chambe Plateau are the usual first objective.

The massif is also the last stronghold of the Mulanje cedar, Malawi's national tree, and the tea estates on the lower slopes are worth an afternoon in their own right.

Best time to visit Mulanje Massif

May to October

The dry season gives stable weather and firm paths. June and July are cold on the plateau — near freezing at night — so bring proper layers. Avoid December through March, when heavy rain makes the rock slippery and cloud sits on the summit for days at a time.

Getting there

About an hour and a half from Blantyre by road. Most of our southern itineraries start at Chileka Airport in Blantyre and drive straight out to the foot of the mountain.

Common questions

How fit do you need to be to hike Mulanje?
Reasonably fit. The climb onto the plateau is a steady four to six hours of uphill walking with a day pack. You do not need technical skills or equipment for the standard routes.
Do you need a guide on Mulanje?
Yes, and it is required as well as sensible. The plateau is large, paths are not always obvious, and weather can close in quickly. A licensed guide and porters come as part of our Mulanje itineraries.
Can you climb Mulanje in one day?
You can walk up onto the plateau and back in a long day, but reaching Sapitwa needs at least two days with a hut overnight.
